So if you haven’t heard about the story of Harambe the gorilla then I will fill you in. Long story short a 3 year old little boy managed to get into the gorilla’s cage unbeknownst to his parents. Harambe didn’t show any signs of aggression nor did any other gorilla’s that were in the cage with him. The moment that Harambe dragged the boy into the water that’s when everyone started to panic and the zoo keepers at the Cincinnati Zoo decided to kill Harambe.
Here’s my issue. I would never want to put the child’s life aside and say that it’s not worth saving or put into perspective. What I want to say is that this situation could have been handled a lot differently.
The questions that are on everyone’s lips is…. where were the parents? Where is their responsibility in all of this? Could there have been another way to handle Harambe?
I personally believe that the parents should take some fault in this because it shouldn’t have been that easy for their child to get away from them. Had Harambe been an aggressive gorilla from the beginning this could have been a different story. He wasn’t aggressive to the child. In fact he was protecting the child from the onlookers who were screaming in fear over the child.
So the zoo keepers acted swiftly and grabbed a gun instead of other methods to handle the situation. That’s the whole point of everyone’s frustration. Harambe did not have to die. The zoo keepers are trained and have knowledge on how to handle gorilla’s. They could have distracted him with something else….food….toys….something other than him dying.
It’s sad that all of this has happened and I hope that moving forward some other forms of action can be thought about before a gun is the answer. Guns are not always the answer.
Let me repeat that I am happy that the child is alive and well. The parents on the other hand……are just two neglectful people.
Most of all I am sorry for Harambe….and that he lost his life for no reason.
Peace
